I’m here to present a workshop on the connections between Solutions Focus (SF) and Improvisation. So it’s most encouraging to see how one of the world’s largest and most successful festivals has been a wonderful example of using both to such good effect.
It was a routine training conference, about five years ago. Between sessions, there was a nice moment when a guy in shorts and long hair played some jazz on the piano at the side of the stage. We were waiting for a festival manager to lecture on the recruitment policy for a Danish arts festival. The pianist paused, stood up on the stage and began his presentation. He was Espen Bardsen of the Roskilde Festival. He explained how volunteers rapidly construct a city for more than 100,000 participants, run the festival, then take it all down again until the next year. And now I’m at a conference in Copenhagen again, and the presenter is Hans Christian Nielsen, head of HR and Administration for the Roskilde Festival, describing how they use the Solution Focused approach in everything from employee appraisal interviews to strategy development and workplace evaluation.
